Reduction in non-profit staff turnover
Restructured organizational design and standardized recruitment and onboarding workflows within one year.
About
I help overwhelmed founder-CEOs become optimized leaders — replacing daily chaos with clear systems, operating rhythm, and execution that sticks.
Method & Mantle is a fractional Chief of Staff practice founded by Shanshan Thompson in 2025. I partner with founder-CEOs of 1–50 person teams to translate priorities into action, install operating rhythm, and remove the coordination load that quietly slows companies down.
The name reflects the work itself: method — the systems, structure, and cadence that make a team run; mantle — the responsibility a Chief of Staff picks up so the founder doesn't have to carry every operational decision alone.
Based in Blacksburg, Virginia, I work with clients virtually worldwide and take select in-person engagements.
Previously known as methodandmantle.live — now consolidated at methodandmantleops.com.

Founder's Note
I have always been drawn to structure, clarity, and the systems behind how things work.
Early in my career, I helped Chinese students navigate the complexity of U.S. university admissions by building processes that turned confusion into clear, repeatable outcomes. That experience shaped how I work today: I help founders and executives turn complexity into structure, and structure into results.
What has stayed consistent is this: when the right systems are in place, success becomes more intentional, more scalable, and far less dependent on constant fire-fighting.
Most organizations do not struggle because of a lack of ambition. They struggle because complexity quietly compounds.
Too many tools. Too many priorities. No clear operating rhythm. Decisions get delayed, communication fragments, and execution starts depending too heavily on the founder or executive at the center.
I came to see organizing not as a narrow skill, but as a strategic discipline. Real clarity comes from aligning people, process, priorities, and environment so the business can move with focus and consistency.
When leaders reduce friction and design for clarity, they create the conditions for better execution, stronger teams, and more sustainable growth.
I value frameworks, but I do not rely on generic playbooks.
Over the past decade, I have worked across startups, global coalitions, and executive teams — bridging strategy, operations, and leadership execution. I have led cross-functional initiatives, supported board-level discussions, built strategic frameworks, improved internal systems, and translated complexity into clear action.
My work lives at the intersection of strategic planning, organizational design, execution systems, and AI operating model integration. I help leaders build structures that do not just look good on paper, but actually work in practice.
That means clarifying what matters, designing systems that support it, and building operating models that can scale.
I work with founders and executives as a Chief of Staff and strategic operator to bring clarity, coordination, and disciplined execution to growing organizations.
My role is simple in principle and powerful in practice:
I am especially passionate about supporting founders navigating growth, CEOs who need a trusted strategic partner, and non-technical leaders who want to adopt AI thoughtfully without becoming engineers.
Through Method & Mantle, I help organizations move from overwhelmed to optimized — strengthening both their business systems and their leadership rhythm.
If you are building something ambitious and want clearer structure, stronger execution, and forward-looking operating design behind you, let's connect.

Proof of Work
Deeper looks at how operational partnership translates into organizational change.
Before · A senior leader carried undocumented processes, unclear responsibilities, and excessive day-to-day coordination. The role had grown beyond its original scope, but the structure had not.
What I changed · Mapped responsibilities across the team, created delegation systems, standardized operating documentation, and established leadership rhythms so decisions did not all route through one person.
Result · Reclaimed 10+ hours of executive capacity per week while enabling the leader to step into a higher-level strategic role.
Before · A non-profit had no clear organizational structure, repeated role confusion, and high staff turnover. People were leaving because they could not see how to succeed.
What I changed · Defined reporting lines, role expectations, and handoff protocols; then built repeatable processes for recruitment, onboarding, and internal operations.
Result · Reduced staff turnover by 20% and gave the team a stable foundation to grow from.
Before · A newly hired principal had limited context on the organization's history, culture, and stakeholder landscape. Without a structured entry, months of potential momentum were at risk.
What I changed · Designed a structured onboarding roadmap covering strategic context, stakeholder map, communication norms, and early wins; managed expectations upward and built trust across the team.
Result · The new leader reached full productivity four weeks faster than the typical ramp, with stronger team alignment from day one.
Before · Leadership knew AI was critical, but had no role definition, hiring process, or decision framework for building the function.
What I changed · Project-managed the end-to-end build: defined the AI Director mandate, created the interview rubric, sourced and screened candidates, and coordinated stakeholders through a clear decision process.
Result · Hired the right AI Director on time and aligned the leadership team around how the new function would connect to operations and strategy.
Operating Modes
I am not an executive assistant, and I am not a generic consultant delivering advice from the sidelines. I work as an embedded operational partner — five modes, depending on what the company needs.
