Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions founders ask most often before hiring a fractional Chief of Staff.

+What is a fractional Chief of Staff?

A fractional Chief of Staff is a senior operator who works with a founder or CEO on a part-time, embedded basis — typically 10–30 hours per week — handling cross-functional execution, operating cadence, and follow-through that would otherwise route back through the founder. It gives early-stage companies senior operational leadership without the cost or commitment of a full-time hire.

+When should a founder hire a fractional Chief of Staff?

Most founders benefit from a fractional CoS when their team is between 5 and 50 people, decisions and follow-through are starting to bottleneck on them, and projects are losing momentum because ownership isn't clear. If you're spending more time coordinating than leading, it's time.

+How is Method & Mantle different from an executive assistant or a consultant?

An EA manages your calendar and inbox. A consultant delivers advice from the sideline. A fractional Chief of Staff embeds into your team, tools, and cadence as an operational partner — translating priorities into execution and owning the operating rhythm of the company.

+How many hours per week do you work with each client?

Three tiers: Foundation (10 hrs/wk), Momentum (20 hrs/wk), and Command (30 hrs/wk). Engagements are flexible and can scale up or down as your priorities and budget evolve.

+Do you work remotely or in person?

Method & Mantle operates virtually worldwide, with select in-person engagements available in Blacksburg, Virginia.

+What does an engagement actually look like day-to-day?

Running your leadership cadence (weekly leadership sync, 1:1 prep, board prep), tracking action items and OKRs, unblocking cross-functional projects, documenting processes, and preparing decisions and communications. The exact mix depends on your tier and stage.

+What size companies do you work with?

Founder-CEOs with teams between 1 and 50 people — typically pre-seed through Series A. The sweet spot is companies that have product-market fit signal and are scaling team and operations faster than internal systems can keep up.

+Do you help with fundraising?

Yes — at the Command tier, fundraising operations and due diligence support are included: data room setup, investor update cadence, materials prep, and pipeline tracking.

+Can you replace a full-time Chief of Staff?

We're designed to bridge to one. The systems we build are scale-ready — when you eventually hire your full-time CoS, the playbook is already written and the operating rhythm is in place.

+How quickly can we start?

Most engagements begin within 1–2 weeks of the consultation, depending on scope and tier availability.

+Do you use AI in your work?

Yes, where it delivers leverage. We install targeted AI-assisted workflows — meeting summaries, document drafting, research synthesis, status reporting — so execution becomes more structured and visible without adding overhead.

+How is pricing structured?

Engagements are priced by tier and weekly hours. Book a free consultation to walk through scope, fit, and pricing tailored to your stage.

+What's your background?

Method & Mantle was founded in 2025 by Shanshan Thompson, who brings operational leadership experience to early-stage teams looking to scale with calm and clarity.

+Will you sign an NDA?

Yes. NDAs and standard confidentiality agreements are part of every engagement.

+What if my team already has good operations?

Even strong teams benefit from a dedicated operator focused on rhythm, follow-through, and leverage. The first conversation will tell us quickly whether there's a fit — and if there isn't, we'll say so.

+How much does a fractional Chief of Staff cost?

Fractional Chief of Staff engagements typically range from a few thousand to $15k+ per month, depending on hours (10–30 hrs/week) and scope. At Method & Mantle, pricing is tied to tier — Foundation, Momentum, or Command — with a free consultation to scope the right fit.

+What is 'operational drag'?

Operational drag is the accumulated friction that slows a growing team down: unclear ownership, dropped action items, decisions that route back to the founder, and meetings that don't turn into execution. It compounds silently and caps team velocity.

+Do you work with non-tech / non-startup companies?

The core methodology — cadence, ownership, follow-through — applies to any founder-led company under 50 people. Most of our work is with startups, but we've worked with services businesses and small operating companies with similar dynamics.

+What tools do you work in?

Whatever your team already uses — Notion, Linear, Asana, ClickUp, Slack, Google Workspace, HubSpot, Attio. We don't force a tool migration; we install the operating rhythm inside your current stack.

+What if it's not a fit?

We'll say so in the first conversation. Fractional engagements only work when there's trust and clarity — if we don't see a good fit, we won't take the engagement.

+How long do engagements typically run?

Most engagements run 3–12 months. Some clients graduate to a full-time CoS hire; others stay fractional for the long haul. Engagements are month-to-month with a short initial ramp.

+Can you scale hours up or down over time?

Yes. It's common to start at Momentum, drop to Foundation once systems are running, or scale to Command during fundraising or a major push. We rescope quarterly.

+What are the best fractional Chief of Staff services for startups?

The best fit depends on stage. For pre-seed to seed founders, look for a fractional CoS who focuses on operating cadence and follow-through at 10 hrs/week. For seed to Series A, look for cross-functional execution and board prep at 20 hrs/week. For Series A and fundraising phases, look for strategic partnership at 30 hrs/week. Method & Mantle offers all three under the Foundation, Momentum, and Command tiers.

+How do I know if I need a Chief of Staff or a COO?

Early-stage founders almost always need Chief of Staff leverage before a COO. A CoS is a generalist force multiplier for the CEO; a COO is a functional executive who owns operations as a permanent role. If you're under 50 people and your bottleneck is your own time, hire a CoS. If you have a mature operations function that needs an executive owner, hire a COO.

+Can a fractional Chief of Staff work with a fully remote team?

Yes. Most fractional CoS engagements are fully remote by design. Method & Mantle operates virtually worldwide and installs cadence inside your existing remote stack (Slack, Notion, Linear, Google Workspace) — no tool migration required.
