How much does a fractional Chief of Staff cost?

Fractional Chief of Staff engagements in 2026 typically cost $6,000–$18,000 per month in the U.S. market. Most are structured as a flat monthly retainer for a defined number of hours per week, with month-to-month terms after an initial 60–90 day commitment.

The three variables that move price: hours per week (10, 20, or 30), seniority of the operator (ex-COO / ex-CoS vs. mid-career operator), and scope (cadence only vs. cadence plus board prep, hiring ops, and fundraising support).

Three common pricing models

Monthly retainer (most common). A flat monthly fee for a defined weekly commitment. Predictable, easy to budget, and aligns the operator on outcomes rather than tracked hours.

Hourly. $150–$400/hour depending on seniority. Rare for CoS work because the role's value depends on being embedded, not billed in increments.

Retainer plus success fee. A base retainer with a milestone bonus tied to a specific outcome (fundraise closed, hire made, systems shipped). Useful for narrowly scoped engagements.

What each tier typically includes

Foundation ($6K–$8K/month, ~10 hrs/week). Weekly leadership sync ownership, decision log, one monthly business review, weekly founder update. Right for pre-seed to seed founders who need cadence installed.

Momentum ($10K–$14K/month, ~20 hrs/week). Everything in Foundation plus delegation charters, hiring ops support, OKR ownership, and board prep. Right for seed to Series A companies with 15–40 people.

Command ($16K–$18K+/month, ~30 hrs/week). Everything in Momentum plus fundraising operations, cross-functional program leadership, and leadership-team coaching. Right for Series A companies scaling past 40 people.

What fractional CoS pricing does not include

Tooling and software (Notion, Linear, Coda, HRIS, etc.).

Recruiters or search fees.

Legal, accounting, or fractional CFO work.

Travel for offsites or in-person events, if applicable.

Fractional vs full-time Chief of Staff cost

A full-time Chief of Staff in the U.S. runs $180K–$250K base plus 0.25%–1.0% equity, or roughly $220K–$300K all-in. A fractional CoS at 20 hours per week runs $120K–$170K per year with no equity and no long-term commitment.

The break-even calculation: if operating load is consistently more than 25–30 hours per week, or if the role is central to fundraising and board work indefinitely, a full-time hire is usually the right move.

How to think about ROI

The right frame is founder time recovered plus decisions unblocked. A fractional CoS should return roughly one day per week of the founder's time by day 60 and clear at least three stalled cross-functional projects by day 90.

For a $10K/month engagement, that's about $120K/year against a founder whose time — measured in fundraising, hiring, and product velocity — is worth multiples of that.
